In recent news, Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) ceased to exist as Dr. Arif Alvi, the President Islamic Republic of Pakistan, approves the bill for the constitution of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) 2022.
By December 2022, the parliament passed a bill that stated that the PM would form Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) by officially announcing it in a gazette.
The bill suggested that for the council, the PM would elect 3 members from civil society. A retired high court judge, a lawyer with a minimum of 15 years of experience, and an army medical surgeon will also constitute the council.
Along with this, the council seats will be titled as secretary National Health Services, provincial health secretaries, 5 licensed medical officers, including a dentist, a chartered accountant, a philanthropist, and an elected member from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan.
Here, it is pertinent to note that in October (2019), President Alvi enacted the ruling to disband and replace the PMDC with a new body, namely PMC. Later on, amidst the dispute of ex-PM Khan’s cousin as its undeclared lead, this ruling turned into a parliamentary act.
But, by August 20 (2022), PM Shehbaz nullified the nomination of 7 members out of 9 and appointed 7 new members for PMC.
Then again, a bill was passed by the parliament for the restoration of PMDC. Yet, Mr. President abrogates it. Then by December (2022), the entire parliamentonce again passed a bill, which became a parliamentary act.
Finally, after formally receiving a declaration from the President, the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) is now dissolved.
