Whenever I feel down I eat food which I like the most. I don’t know why but it helps me revive my mood. Although I’m not a food addict I have good taste and I always enjoy good food. And I know it isn’t only me but for many people, simple food choices make the difference between feeling worse and feeling better. In fact, there are researches that show what we eat goes right to our limbic system, the emotional central room of our body.
In a mental state like depression and anxiety, it is already difficult to force yourself to eat a certain way. However, among other things, there are also some foods that can make you more depressed and you should try not to eat them.
Coffee Or Caffeine:
For many people including myself, caffeine is an escape from worries. It gives a sensation of getting relaxed and what else could you ask for more. However, if you’re battling with depression then you should avoid caffeine and all sort of caffeinated beverages. Yes! You may actually benefit from skipping it, at least for a while. According to researches, consumption of caffeine significantly increases your risk for Depression and Anxiety.
Sugar:
In depression, you shouldn’t be eating too much sugar. Sugar causes your blood sugar levels to go up and this depletes your energy and disrupts your mood. That’s why, if you’re battling depression or know that you’re more prone to depressive episodes, you need to cut off high sugar intake.
Processed Foods:
Processed foods aren’t good for your health and there are many reasons for this. However, it is especially bad for you if you’re battling depression. According to a study published in The British Journal of Psychiatry, you’re more likely to develop depression if you eat more processed foods like fried food and snacks.
Food High In Sodium:
The high intake of sodium can disrupt your neurological system, contributes to Depression and Anxiety, cause fatigue, and disturbs your immune system response. Too much salt in your diet also leads to water retention and bloating and I think you already know how depressing it is. So, keep all these things in your mind before getting your hands to the salt shaker.
I just hope I haven’t already eliminated everything from your food list but anything that contributes to depression should be eliminated. After all, nothing is important than the peace of your mind.
