Some Health Professionals Say, There’s only one type of UV light that can inactivate Covid-19 and it is extremely dangerous!
COVID19 affects different people in different ways, all depending on the level of immunity that they have. Similarly, every person now has their own way to fight and disinfect COVID19 germs. Some people use expensive disinfectant sprays. Whereas, some believe in using the homemade disinfected spray because apparently both work the same, right?. As yet, no one knows what actually works on this and what does not. Some news and information say that UV light has some capabilities to kill the COVID19 germs.
What Is A UV Light?
Ultraviolet light is electromagnetic radiation. Healthcare providers say that too much exposure to UV radiation can damage our living tissue. The UV light falls into 4 categories UVA, UVB, UVC, and vacuum-UV. The one having the longest wavelengths is UVA and it falls between 400 to 315 nanometers.
Whereas on the other hand, vacuum-UV has the shortest wavelengths that fall between 100 and 200 nanometers.
Places like Airline companies, Big businesses, hotels, and hospitals use the UVC light for disinfection purposes. They say it kills off viruses that chemicals might miss. UVC light ranges between 280 and 200 nanometers.
Is UV Light Safe?
Overexposure to the UV light is not safe. Doctors and professionals say that if a UV or UVC light can damage the RNA present in the viruses then it is also capable of damaging the DNA inside cells present in our skin.
Moreover, excessive exposure to UV lights can cause:
- Premature Ageing
- Wrinkles
- Leather Skin
- Liver Spots
- Actinic Keratosis
- Solar Elastosis.
Some healthcare professionals say that “If it’s not going to harm your skin or eyes, it’s not the right amount of UV energy”.
Can A UV Light Kill COVID19?
Since decades, UVC lights are being used as a disinfectant for surfaces and to kill various viruses. While we are still waiting for a stronger study to prove that whether the UVC light is able to kill the COVID19 virus or not, various studies have already shown that it can kill other viruses like influenza and other seasonal coronaviruses.
How Can A Light Kill A Virus?
According to a theory, the UVC light damages is able to kill the RNAs present in the virus so they are no longer able to reproduce and infect. So, according to the studies, it can kill viruses easily by the intensity of wavelengths present. Typical germs or viruses can be killed at a wavelength of 254 nanometers but as every virus is different, it depends on how well the UV light can kill it. We need to learn that all the viruses and germs, they’re not one thing. Some of them are found to be very strong and resistant to be killed by a UV dose whereas some are more susceptible and are killed by a low UV dose. A UVC light can kill 99.9% of viruses and bacteria so yes, it might work on the COVID19 germs too.
According To The Research
The researches done at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center shows that the UV/UVC lights are capable of killing more than 99.9% of seasonal coronaviruses that are present in the air. The airborne droplets were killed when they were exposed to a UVC light of a wavelength of 222 nanometers.
Not considered safe to use on human skin directly, the places such as hospitals, buses, planes, trains, train stations, schools, restaurants, offices, theaters, gyms, and anywhere that people gather indoors are recommended to use a far-UVC light for disinfection.
It can be used in combination with other measures to eliminate the transmission of COVID19 and other viruses
A Word From Marham
Telemedicine by far has been the best help and the best service in the times of COVID19 lockdown. People who could not or did not want to step out in the unsafe hospital or clinic environments were connected to their doctors through the Marham telemedicine service. Thousands of people used online video consultations through Marham to talk to their healthcare providers and according to them, this service has been a blessing to them.
