World Health Organization is calling a committee for a meeting this Friday to decide whether after three years, COVID is still a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) or not.
In view of the reported deaths globally, Covid had declared a public health emergency on Jan 30th, 2020 in a meeting held by WHO. It was a unanimous decision made by the committee members. Since then, almost 6.7 million people have died and almost 664 million people have been infected by the virus, globally.
WHO is calling a committee to meet on Friday in their 14th sitting since the Covid pandemic appeared first time in China to make a settlement on the recent status of the viral pandemic.
According to IHR (International Health Regulations), a health event is declared an emergency if it is serious and sudden, it has the ability to spread across the countries, and it requires a coordinated international response.
However, the Director-General of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, gave an indication on Tuesday that almost 170,000 Covid deaths have been reported in the last 8 weeks hence he doesn’t feel that the time is right to end the global emergency.
Whatever the decision will be on Friday, experts believe that Covid is still a threat to the countries and they should continue with their current policies related to the eradication of the fatal infectious Covid virus.
