Some time back, we talked about effective stress management techniques that can hopefully help in modifying the increasing cases of anxiety and depression disorders in Pakistan. However, on the downside, research proves that excess stress can cause the incidence of multiple diseases. It is always a wise choice to know what you are getting into and prepare yourselves accordingly.
Heart disease:
When you are obsessing over the kink in the perfectly ordered set of pencils (also commonly known as OCD – Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), your heart starts pounding on the walls of the chest. Within no time, heart rate rises and causes the release of triglycerides and cholesterols in the bloodstream. In people with habitual smoking habits and obesity, this can cause blockage in the blood vessels of the heart (coronary arteries). Blockage can cause a deprivation of oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscles. Hence, the initiation of the heart diseases which may manifest themselves in the form of chest pain.
Obesity:
Obesity and overweight is a condition on the continuous increase in the third world countries in the world, especially Pakistan. When you have an amazing cool breeze with a thunderous rain, a plate of hot potato samosas and jalebi dipped in tea is a MUST! There, I have done it. Described the dilemma of our society.
However, while there is an accumulation of fat in various regions of the body, the fat being stored in the abdomen is the most detrimental to stressed people. Higher incidences of stress directly induce the release of the hormone Cortisol. High levels of cortisol in the bloodstream induce the body to go into storage mode and accelerate the accumulation of fat in the abdomen.
Diabetes:
People predisposed with diabetes are prone to binge eating and developing unhealthy eating habits in the conditions of high stress, work-related or office-related. These unnatural habits can lead to the disruption of the body’s metabolism and hence develop the diabetic medical condition. Those patients already diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus are more prone to worsening their disorder in this way.
Furthermore, in people who are not predisposed to diabetes have the prospect of developing diabetes due to the elevated levels of the stress hormones in their bloodstream. In the fight or flight mode characteristic of high stress fosters the elevated levels of adrenaline which feeds on sugar.
Headache:
It is found to be more common than any health problem when a person is suffering from elevated levels of stress. The increased throbbing of a head under stress can worsen into developing into migraines.
Migraines induce the photosensitivity in people, who are clinically diagnosed with it and make it even harder to continue with work or academics while suffering through the constant hammering in the brain.
Gastrointestinal problems:
Acidity or heartburn is worsened for people with chronic stress. Even though it does not cause the formation of stomach ulcers, research suggests that it may contribute to their worsening. When you have to stand, in an auditorium full of people or cabbages uncomfortably resting on their heads, you might experience what is known as IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).
